I was frugal to a fault and had this obsession with free stuff for a long time, probably

in my early 20s, extending for quite a while.

You know there are stories about your grandpa driving 50 miles to say 50 cents a gallon

That was basically like me, except I wasn't a grandpa, I was 20 years old.
