Summary

US immigration policy has become one of the most contentious issues in American politics, but there is one point on which most of us agree: our immigration policy is broken. And while the sheer number of interests involved mean that an easy fix is unlikely, the best place to start is with a sound understanding of how we got the immigration system we have today. As a historian of immigration who currently serves as Director for the Americas and Europe at Refugees International, Yael Schacher has a particularly well informed perspective on this issue. In this episode, Yael walks us through the history of immigration policy in the US and shares what she sees as the major challenges that stand in the way of reforming our current immigration system. This episode was edited by Gary Fletcher.

I'm Ben Sawyer and this is the road to now.

Today on the show, we are talking about the history of immigration policy in the United States

0:13.3

with Yael Shacher. This is obviously an important issue with the election coming up, and I feel

0:18.8

like there's an incomplete story being told by both major

0:22.2

parties. And I think this is something that both for the sake of our own country and for the

0:27.4

sake of humanity in general, we need to wrap our heads around. So I spent a lot of time trying

0:32.5

to find someone who could speak intelligently on this, looking at it from a comprehensive

0:37.2

perspective.

0:38.3

And Yael turned out to be what I thought was the ideal guest.

0:42.0

She not only has a PhD in immigration history.

0:45.2

She also works for Refugees International, where she serves as director for the Americas in Europe.

0:51.0

This conversation goes from policy to the origins of American immigration policy

0:56.4

through the ways that the Cold War shaped our current policy. And it is really, to me,

1:01.4

as good as an episode could be. Now, let's be clear up front. This is a topic that people

1:07.5

disagree on. And so maybe you're going to listen to this and you're going to say, hey, this was left out or, hey, I don't agree with this. That's okay. What I want to do here is go through this story from someone who is dealing in facts, from someone who is not in politics, and from someone who has looked at this from a variety of angles. If you listen to this and you think there's

1:28.0

someone else we should talk to, please let us know. Email us at Road to Nowcast at gmail.com.

1:33.4

Give us a good guest. And hopefully we can follow up with episodes that make a more comprehensive

1:38.6

picture. And hopefully we can start a conversation featuring guests who are not in politics and have little

1:45.4

to gain personally from this, aside from trying to actually help our country and help those

1:51.1

who are often running for their lives.

1:53.1

We hope you enjoy this conversation.

1:54.8

Patrons, we always thank you for your service.
