Fr. Joseph Lucas published a thesis on the question of sacrifice, called Offerer and Offering: Cyril of Alexandria on Jewish and Christian Sacrifice. Bio: Father Joseph Lucas is an Orthodox Christian priest, theological scholar, and practical philosopher. He received his PhD. in Theology from the St. Irenaeus Orthodox Theological Institute at Radboud Universiteit Nijmegan, and his MDiv. with Distinction in Patristics and Church History from St. Tikhon Orthodox Theological Seminary.
Father Joseph is the author of Prayer of the Publican: Justification in the Desert Fathers. He is a Senior Editor of Rule of Faith Journal. Rule of Faith is an Orthodox Christian journal wherein scholars, clergy, and artists elucidate the culture of faith and engage the questions of our time.

0:48.2	Father Joseph is the priest and pastor at Christ the Savior Cathedral, the OCA Cathedral in Florida.

1:04.1	It is an Orthodox journal theology. But here I have him here with me today because we had amazing discussions when I was there. He has published his own thesis on the question of sacrifice
1:09.1	in Saint Cyril of Alexandria. I am lucky to have a copy of it
1:12.9	here. And I thought that it would be a really wonderful to explore that with him now and look at how
1:18.5	the Church Fathers, obviously, especially St. Cyril, sees the question of sacrifice in the Old Testament,
1:23.8	in the New Testament, how Christ transforms the question of sacrifice, and just in general,
1:29.0	the insight that he provides. And so Father Joseph, thanks for coming with us.

1:35.0	And so when we talked, you said you had watched, I think, even one of my videos, and you
1:38.4	thought there was some interesting connections to make with the manner in which St. Cyril presents
1:43.0	the question of sacrifice.
1:48.2	So maybe you can start us there and tell us what it is that you think, what insight do you think that he provides? Well, I think for one thing, it's great because St. Cyril really had a,
1:56.2	he focused his career, I would say, he focused his career on trying to understand the Old
2:00.2	Testament and how the New Testament is the fulfillment of the Old Testament. And because sacrifice is such an important part of the law, he had to deal with it a lot. And it comes up frequently throughout his writing. So he gives a very deep interpretation of it. But it's also important, I think, to understand it as part of his
2:19.4	overall biblical interpretation. Like what he's trying to do with the law, how he's trying to bring
2:24.1	the law into, you know, into the church in a way that can be understood properly. And so sacrifice,
2:31.4	I think, is at the root of that. And so what does he think sacrifice is for? Well, I think, is at the root of that. And so what does he think sacrifices for?
