Episode 317 We talk as though we have ideas. But ideas have us. Like a really good idea completely structures you. It makes

you who you are. So even if we weren't biased by class and race and gender and all the normal

things we talk about in politics, we are shaped so much by our ideas that the idea that we

are going to like select from up high which idea to have is ridiculous.

That was the voice of Dr. Sarah Stein-Lebrano, a political scientist who studies how cognitive dissonance affects all sorts of political behavior. She

studies all sorts of other things too, but she has appeared on this program before to help

us understand cognitive dissonance. And since then, she has written the book titled,

Don't Talk About Politics. It's, it's, there's, there's, you do talk about politics, but not the way we

normally do. It's, it's a whole thing. But yes, the book is titled, don't talk about politics.

And I like to think it means don't only just talk about politics. You need to actually do things.

And those things should be based off of science. And we're going to talk all about that in a minute.

The book is about how to discuss politics without necessarily talking about politics and about how to change political views and affect change in politics and laws and institutions and norms and so on through strategies other than
