It's News Day Tuesday! Sam and Emma break down the biggest headlines of the day. First, They run through updates on Donald Trump’s federal trial date, the New Hampshire GOP’s civil war over the 2024 Primary ballot, Trump’s rampant support in Georgia, increasing COVID hospitalization rates, and Biden and Lula’s plan to call for improved labor conditions, before watching Jesse Watters do some wildly racist pandering to Black people over Trump’s mugshot. Sam and Emma then parse through the upcoming Medicare drug price negotiations, looking at how Biden’s IRA got us here, what his plan for the negotiations is, and how this particular element allows the US government to save en masse and will likely push down drug prices for the rest of us. After tackling the likely lawsuits that will follow Biden’s attempt to impose these negotiations, they shift the conversation to the NLRB’s massive ruling on union busting in the leadup to elections, first contextualizing the NLRB’s doctrine for much of the 20th Century (and why that doctrine got changed) that helped keep union elections legitimate, before walking through the specifics of the recent Cemex Construction ruling, and how it forces employers to bargain and threatens union busting with full unionization. Wrapping up, Sam and Emma discuss Trader Joe’s United filing the first Cemex Bargaining Order, and the unionization attempt in Disney’s VFX department.
And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma discuss Kevin McCarthy finally coming around on the futile impeachment claims against Joe Biden, John from Eugene explores the feasibility of various gun control arguments, Willow from Minnesota parses through trans migration in the US and dealing with general despair over the lasting assault on trans rights from the GOP. Zach from Colorado calls in to cover discrimination in the medical education system, and Glenn Beck calls for restoring an era of social security that never existed, plus, your calls and IMs!
