King Edgar is dead and in his place, reigned his son, King Edward of England.

And you'd think we'd be referring to him as King Edward I.

Or if you wanted to fudge the dates a little bit and give Edward the Elder some credit

for forming the kingdom of the Anglo-Saxons, maybe King Edward II.

But that's not what we call him at all.

Now personally, I blame the Normans for this.

They weren't all that keen on acknowledging the fact that there was this whole other dynasty

that existed before they ever set foot in England.

But whatever the case, King Edward, much like his grandfather, wasn't given a number.

He was given a nickname.

Edward the Martyr, which is a bit of a spoiler.
