Summary

Kendelle Hoyer is passionate about storytelling and art, which has been a life-long pursuit since childhood when she decided she wanted to work in animation. Since then, Kendelle has developed her craft of bringing fantastical stories to life. She has been privileged to work on feature films at major animation studios since 2008, and is currently working in Los Angeles as storyboard artist.

0:04.5	And so that's what they want to ask when they listen to a fairy tale.
0:08.3	And the truth is that there's something implicit, which is more important than whatever
0:13.9	moral you think you should get out of this story.
0:16.1	There's some participation, some mirror of reality, something that is reflecting to you, something precious
0:22.3	and powerful and sometimes beautiful, sometimes tragic, but it's more than immoral.
0:27.6	And that's where, like, it seems like that feminine thing. It's very elusive. It's implicit,
0:33.8	not explicit. And the mistake people try to make is they try to, when you try to make
0:38.8	the implicit explicit, I think that's when it gets into like propaganda territory. That's when it
0:43.0	gets into like, you're hitting people over the head with it and they, you know, if they want to
0:46.9	hear a sermon, they'll go to church. You know, they don't want to hear it. This is Jonathan Peugeot. Welcome to the symbolic world. So hello, everyone.
1:16.1	I am excited to be speaking to Kendall Hoyer.
1:19.6	Kendall is someone who worked at Disney for many, many years,
1:23.3	and she's now co-head of Story at Skydance Studios.
1:27.0	She is an animator, but mostly she is someone who
1:29.8	does storyboard art. She kind of takes the ideas from the script and from the director and
1:35.5	actually creates the basic bones of the story that bring it all together. And so when you watch a
1:41.5	movie that she's worked on, some of the scenes she will have worked out in detail of how the characters react and where they are and everything.
1:48.1	So it's a really a joy to be able to talk to someone like that and see how her thinking,
1:53.3	storytelling, thinking, how she brings symbolism into that and her experience as an artist.
