The people seemed mortified and downcast, and no doubt came to the conclusion that the

rebellion lacked a good deal in being crushed out.

Everything that could be of use to our army was impressed by our authorities, such as wagons,

horses, shoes, sugar, molasses, whiskey, flour, leather, beef, cattle, etc.

It is said that many hundreds of fine cattle have been driven across the Potomac to be used

by our army when we return to Virginia.

I saw fine wagons and teams pass us in the road, taken in Maryland and Pennsylvania.

Our army is now entirely subsisted on its enemy.

This day we crossed the boundary between Maryland and Pennsylvania and marched 10 miles into

Pennsylvania, passing through some pretty villages and towns.

Here our men feasted on cherries, which the country affords the greatest abundance.

They no doubt wishing to retaliate on the enemy for all their excesses committed in the

south.

At the same time, such conduct is prohibited by the authorities.
