In the 1930s, a time when plastic surgery was still developing as a field, it was considered a little

disreputable by a lot of people. There was a younger cohort of surgeons who are really trying

to reshape that narrative, and one of them them this man called Dr. John Howard Crumb

he decided the best way to get plastic surgery into the limelight was by being

And so in 1932 at the International Beauty Owners Conference in New York,

he did a live demonstration. So he had about a thousand people crowd into this really fancy

hotel I think in midtown Manhattan and he strode onto the stage he had this four-piece orchestra behind him and everything was black and spotlights,

and he brought in this woman, she was pale, she was short, and her face was covered with a mask.

And the surgeon, he told the audience,

this lady, she has been in prison for 20 years
