As you'll recall, we left off last time in late December 1860 with major Robert Anderson

having just moved to small command out Fort Sumter in the middle of Charleston Harbor.

So that's where we'll start again this week.

And as we return to the events transpiring at Charleston, the important thing to remember

is that since Anderson believed for a mulch tree on Sullivan's Island was an exceedingly

vulnerable and tempting target for this secessionist, he hoped that by moving out to the more

secure location of Fort Sumter, he would actually be lessening the prospect of conflict.

Now that he was established at Sumter, major Anderson hoped that, with enough time, the

politicians could settle the issue without bloodshed.

Well, alright, so on the morning of December 27th, when the South Carolinians discovered

that Anderson had transferred the garrison from Fort Mul tree to Fort Sumter, they pretty

much had a cow.

What you mean to say is that they were surprised and extremely agitated.

So, when the news reached Governor Pickens, he pretty much had a cow.

So Pickens promptly dispatched a couple of militia officers out to Sumter to demand that

Anderson return to Fort Mul tree.
