So I always like to begin these podcasts with bringing in something that just reminds me of God's goodness and his grace.

And I'm not sure where I pick this up, but it's a copy of the only hymns.

The only hymns were first published in 1779.

This is an 1862 copy.

Yeah, I was going to say it's not a new copy at all.

It looks pretty old.

No, it's very delicate.

The only hymns were written by John Newton and his poet friend William Culper.

And these two men's lives just preach the gospel.

Newton was a captain of slave ships who got rescued by his grace.

And Culper was a man who was perennially depressed, and I think that Newton actually got him involved in the hymn writing just to get him focused on the gospel and not on his darkness.

I really think that's why it happened.

But it reminds me of the power of the gospel.

I keep this next to my bed.
