Summary

Over the years, THP has discussed buck bedding as a big part of their hunting strategy. Recently the folks at the Mississippi State University Deer Lab did a study that tracked buck bedding behaviors. In this episode, Zach talks with Luke Resop about the study, what was learned, and how we can use it to our advantage when making a plan to hunt mature bucks...or can we? Topics Include: -how often bucks bed in the same areas -what time of the day bucks bed the most -times of the season bucks are the easiest to pattern NEW THP VIDEO PODCAST CHANNEL! - https://www.youtube.com/@thehuntingpublicpodcast/videos THP MERCH: https://bit.ly/30ZC1rm - Get 10% off THP Merch w/Code ZACH OPTICS - 10% off Vortex Optics w/code THP10 - https://bit.ly/3AOdKDQ TURKEY CALLS - Get 10% off Woodhaven Calls w/coupon code - THP2022 - http://bit.ly/2IagiSe MAPPING - Get 20% Off OnX Hunt! Hey everyone appreciate you tuning into this episode on this one. I'm going to be joined by Luke

0:06.0

Riesop from the MSU Deer Lab. He's been a guest on the podcast before so you might have heard some of those episodes but on this one we're

0:14.1

specifically going to be talking about a buck betting study that was done at

0:18.6

MSU. Over the years at THP you've probably heard us talk a lot about buck betting but it's an interesting topic

0:24.9

because just because we find a buck bed doesn't necessarily mean that that's exactly where

0:30.7

we're going to set up or even really have an expectation of hunting there in the future.

0:35.8

It's just one piece of the puzzle and in some cases we may hunt closer to it than others but

0:41.2

it's always a big piece of the puzzle and what Luke and I are going to be

0:43.9

talking about is some of the patterns that deer have throughout the year where they

0:49.1

bed, how often they bed, what time of the day they're bedded down, and just in general all things related to buck betting.

0:56.3

So hopefully you guys enjoy this one and hopefully you can apply some of the things that you

1:00.9

learn from this podcast to your hunting strategy in the future.

1:05.0

With that being said let's get Luke on the line.

1:10.0

What up dog?

1:11.0

Yeah.

1:12.0

So how you been, man.

1:13.0

Pretty good. Just really, uh, more excited to hunt this year than I have in a while just because I feel like now I'm really getting back, you know, like my body feels more normal because I had knee surgery in March of 2023 and that just, you know, I didn't feel the same last season and it took me until now to like actually realize that too. But what about you?

1:40.0

Man, I'm doing really really good staying super busy but loving every minute of it so

1:46.9

can't complain about anything. Yeah that's awesome. One of the things that I've been

1:52.0

dying to discuss with you and just really anybody associated

1:56.6

with the study is just buck betting habits and like this argument of can you find a buck bed or can you hunt a buck bed and I think it's pretty interesting

2:18.1

mostly because I think there's a lot of strong opinions out there and they can go a lot of different directions and I just think that's always an interesting topic because
