Raised in the Christian patriarchy movement, Cait West was homeschooled and could only wear clothes her father deemed modest. She was five years old the first time she was told her swimsuit was too revealing and to go change. There would be no college in her future, no career. She was a stay-at-home daughter and would move out only when her father allowed her to become a wife. She was trained to serve men, and her life would never be hers.

Until she escaped.

In her gripping memoir, Rift, Cait West tells a harrowing story of chaos and control hidden beneath the facade of a happy family. Weaving together lyrical meditations on the geology of the places her family lived with her story of spiritual and emotional manipulation as a stay-at-home daughter, Cait creates a stirring portrait of one young woman's growing awareness that she is experiencing abuse. With the ground shifting beneath her feet, Cait mustered the courage to break free from all she had ever known and choose a future of her own.

Rift is a story of survival. It's also a story about what happens after you survive. With compassion and clarity, Cait explores the complex legacy of patriarchal religious trauma in her life, including the ways she has also been complicit in systems of oppression. A remarkable literary debut, Rift offers an essential personal perspective on the fraught legacy of purity culture and recent reckonings with abuse in Christian communities.

She's the author of this incredible book called Rift, which details her escape from Christian

0:50.7

patriarchy. It's a really fantastic conversation. And if you're a fan of memoirs at all,

0:55.1

this is a must read. But we really dive a little bit deep into the inner workings of the

1:00.8

patriarchal kind of Christian movement, her experience as a woman within that environment,

1:05.4

and what it meant for her to leave. And now start building, even though a foundation that she once knew has been cracked

1:12.7

and just obliterated as she has kind of deconstructed that worldview. This is a really

1:18.3

fantastic conversation. I swear you're going to enjoy every second. I do want to make one note.

1:22.2

Unfortunately, I had an issue with the provider I used to record my actual interviews. It actually wasn't

1:29.8

them. It was my internet provider had several issues throughout the interview, and I didn't

1:35.2

realize till after that not only did the, you know, kind of live play-through of my recording

1:42.1

look really glitchy and blurry. The audio is okay,

1:46.4

mostly, but it also didn't record the backups that the system I use typically does. So

1:51.9

unfortunately, my angle looks pretty corrupted and rough, but Kate's looks fantastic, so

1:57.5

enjoy her segment, but just please show a little bit of, you know, a little forgiveness to my side for not looking 100% up to par.
