It's clear that Joseph was a faithful son who had his father's best interests at heart.

Thus, given the fact that he'd earlier reported the bad behavior on the part of the concubine's sons, his father is sending him out again in order to check on how things are faring

with the other brothers and the flocks, and then to report back to him.

returned to Genesis and picked up with the Joseph cycle beginning in chapter 37.

It was called, though, the generations of Jacob, that is, the story of Jacob's family.

We were reminded up front that Jacob was a sojourner in the land of Canaan like his fathers before him.

And then we were introduced to Joseph at 17 years old,

keeping the flock with his older half-brothers through the concubines of Jacob,
