Summary

This week on Battleground, Saul David and Patrick Bishop delve into the disappointing turn in US support. Whilst meetings last week at the NATO summit offered a glimmer of hope, the White House's abrupt decision to halt key weapons supplies, including Patriot missiles, has left Ukraine's defences vulnerable. Additionally, we hear directly from Eddy Scott, a 28-year-old British volunteer who tragically lost an arm and a leg in a Russian drone attack while evacuating civilians from the front-line town of Pokrovsk. Eddy shares his harrowing experience and the circumstances that led him to volunteer in Ukraine. Our special guest today is Eddie Scott, a 28-year-old British volunteer who lost a leg and an arm in a Russian drone attack while he was evacuating people from the frontline town of Percrofts in February.

But first, before we get to that incredibly moving and inspirational interview,

1:03.1

let's look at the news this week, and it's been, I have to say, Patrick, a week of mixed

fortunes for Ukraine.

1:09.4

It started out brightly enough with an encouraging meeting

1:12.3

between Presidents Vladimir Zelensky and Donald Trump

1:15.3

on the fringes of the NATO summit in The Hague,

1:18.6

but it ended with the shocking news

1:20.5

that the US is halting supplies of key weapons systems to Ukraine

1:24.3

as the White House puts America's interests first.

1:28.6

Yeah, that's a very worrying development, which we'll come on to later.

1:34.7

But just to get back to that NATO summit, while the members agreed to raise their spending targets

1:41.3

by 5% of GDP on core defence requirements as well as a wider category of

defence and security related spending. So that sounded like a positive development. But as I said

1:54.6

last week, there's a lot of smoke and mirrors involved in arriving at those figures. That goes for all of the countries involved. And the UK,
