When we left off, we were talking about thanes.

Specifically, we were talking about kings' thanes and how they could wield degrees of power

that could rival even the formidable Elder Men.

At this point in this short series, the hope is they have a sense of what incentives

the economic structure created, as well as the way that power flowed in this area and

what these titles meant when they were put in action.

I've tried to make this personal and give you a ground level view of it, but a lot

of this discussion has been by necessity from an almost orbital perspective.

After all, we're talking about incentives, structures and cultures, and that demands

a very broad view.

So today, let's restrict that scope.
