I fish commercially out of Westport, Washington, have for 22 years. I started as a deckhand

on a crab boat the summer after I graduated from Aberdeen High School in 1997, and by 2003 I had my own

boat, a 46-foot combination vessel I named after my daughter, the Katie Marie.

I run dungeon-esque crab in winter, albacore in summer, and whatever pays in between.

It's hard work, cold, wet, dangerous, and underpaid unless you have a good season, and good seasons are getting rarer.

But it's the only thing I've ever done and the only thing

I know how to do, and when I'm 60 miles offshore in a 20-foot swell pulling pots at 4 in the

morning, I don't think about anything except the work. That's worth something. When I'm not on the

water, I'm in the woods. The Olympic Peninsula is the best hunting and foraging country on the West Coast,

and I've been using it hard since I was a kid.

I hunt elk and blacktail deer in the fall, bear in the spring,

and I pick chanterels and morels when they're in season.

But what I really do in the spring, what I look forward to all winter, the thing that gets

me through the dark months on the boat, is shed hunting. Shed hunting is walking the woods
