Summary

When most people think about oral care, they think about toothpaste or mouthwash. But herbs have a long history of supporting the mouth, gums, and oral tissues in ways that are both practical and deeply nourishing.

In this short podcast, I share three of my favorite underrated herbs for oral health and why each one works so differently.

► Plantain for supporting tissue healing

► Marshmallow root for soothing dry, irritated tissues

► Echinacea for oral discomfort and deeper tissue support

I also talk about one of the most important shifts in herbalism: learning how to match herbs to the tissues and patterns involved instead of using the same approach for everyone.

This way of thinking is exactly what Kyle Denton teaches inside the Herbal Dental Care course. Kyle combines 15 years of experience in the dental field with clinical herbalism to teach oral care through an herbalist lens.

Here are three underrated herbs for oral health, and I think at least one of them is going to surprise you.

0:06.0

First up is plantain. This is a classic vulnerable herb, which means an herb that supports tissue healing.

0:13.0

And while it is famous for being used on bee stings, the mouth is also the perfect place to use it.

0:19.0

You can use it as a mouthwash, either as a tea or a

0:21.7

diluted tincture, but plantain is genuinely well researched for oral tissues. For example,

0:27.0

a randomized controlled trial found that patients using Plantago major, plantain, syrup during

0:33.6

radiation therapy had significantly lower oral mucocytis severity and significantly less

0:39.6

pain compared to those in the placebo group. So basically that means that people dealing with

0:44.5

painful mouth sores from cancer treatments got significant relief from this humble little weed.

0:49.7

That's pretty awesome. And why plantain is one of my favorite herbs for oral health.

0:55.7

All right, herb number two is marshmallow root. So marshmallow root can be prepared into this

1:01.5

thick, slimy potion that's deeply moistening and soothing, which of course makes it a beautiful

1:07.2

herb for oral tissues. As a mouthwash, it coats and calms, irritated tissues

1:12.4

in a way that almost nothing else does. Clinically, a marshmallow root mouthwash has been

1:17.5

rated as highly effective for oral mucocytis and, not surprisingly, has been specifically

1:23.5

noted for its benefits in dry mouth as well. So if you've ever had inflammation or irritation in your mouth, and nothing seems to help,

1:31.3

marshmallow root is worth getting to know.

1:33.3

It's one of those herbs that feels like a deep exhale for your tissues.

1:37.3

It's so calming, so soothing.

1:40.3

All right, last but not least, echinacea.

1:43.3

So I know that we think of echinacea as a cold

1:46.1

and flu herb, and it does have some great applications there, especially for the lymph,
