February 20th. The US has vetoed a resolution proposed by Algeria that called for an immediate

ceasefire in Gaza. During the UN Security Council meeting today, U.S. Ambassador to the

UN Linda Thomas Greenfield said any action at the U.N UN should help not hurt the sensitive

negotiations over the hostages held by Hamas. And so while we cannot support a

resolution that would put sensitive negotiations in jeopardy.

We look forward to engaging on a text that we believe will address so many of the concerns we all share.

A text that can and should be adopted by the council, so that we can have a temporary

ceasefire as soon as practicable.

A draft proposal from the U.S. calls for a temporary ceasefire, but it falls short of what other

security council members want. Israel has said it planned to expand military operations in

Rafa and its campaign to destroy Hamas.

But in the draft, the U.S. warned a ground incursion would only result in more harm and

displacement for Palestinian civilians.
