President Joe Biden stressed the need for a compromise on a supplemental security funding bill at the start

of his meeting with top congressional leaders at the White House today.

He called for more aid to Ukraine and Israel.

Congress has until Friday to pass a spending bill to avoid a partial government shutdown.

The Senate passed a bill with aid for Ukraine and Israel earlier this month,

but House Speaker Mike Johnson said he does not plan to bring the bill to the floor,

and a number of GOP House members

oppose more aid to Ukraine.

Ahead of the meeting today Johnson told reporters he's optimistic that a shutdown would be avoided.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer addressed reporters

after the meeting. There's a logic to solving the border. We want to solve it. But we

have to do Ukraine right now because there's an await with that can get done

quickly because that has broad bipartisan

consensus and the border takes some more work which will be happy to work on to

get it done but not hold up the Ukraine bill for it.
