Let's talk about Jackie Robinson.

Now if you're a casual baseball fan like I am, you might think of Jackie Robinson as an

electric hitter and bass runner who broke the color barrier in baseball.

A man celebrated by a sport and by a nation as a symbol of integration, a symbol of progress.

But what I didn't know for a long time is how much it hardened him, not only the road

he took to integrating the major leagues, but also the way he was treated when he finally

played at the highest level.
