Summary

You know that feeling you get when you’re surrounded by pine trees, breathing the crisp mountain air, and feeling the stresses of everyday life slowly melt away? Well, unfortunately that feeling is not afforded to everyone. Studies have shown that BIPOC families do not spend as much time enjoying national parks and public lands as white families do. This fact can be traced back to racism, a lack of representation, and our nation’s history of segregation. In this episode Preethi Harbuck of @localpassportfamily and I unpack the study “People of Color and Their Constraints to National Parks Visitation” and discuss ways that families can make the outdoors more inclusive.

So today I have a really interesting episode to bring you you might have heard the title anti-racism in the wild and thought what in the world is she talking about

1:04.1

well we're going to be breaking down the intersection between racism and the outdoors. A lot of times we think as the national

1:14.6

parks and getting outside as something really relaxing, something refreshing, a way to escape from

1:19.8

it all. But the reality is that black and indigenous people of color never get to escape from

1:25.8

racism. So I really wanted to bring you this episode to help you see

1:30.1

that anti-racism touches every single part of your life in the same way that racism touches

1:36.8

every part of my life. Wherever racism is, anti-racism needs to be. And the outdoors is no exception to that i thought this would be the

1:47.1

perfect time to have this conversation because i know that a lot of you will be getting outside for

1:51.9

black friday and so i wanted you to be aware before you get out there of the things that you can do

1:57.0

to make that space more inclusive to all families if you're feeling a little bit confused about what racism looks like in the outdoors,

2:04.8

I have a couple of examples for you.

2:06.5

So the first is one that I think most of us are familiar with,
