0:09.0	Violent crime continues to fall and is it extraordinarily low rates for the history of the
0:14.8	United States and you might say David that's not what I'm hearing on Fox News
0:18.1	it's certainly not what I'm hearing from Republicans I'm hearing crime is up and
0:21.6	that under Joe Biden the United States has become a
0:24.7	violent crime-rittled country the likes of which none of us would ever imagine
0:31.0	under Donald Trump well unfortunately none of that comports with the facts.
0:35.2	And this is maybe the most important or notable example
0:40.4	of anecdote versus statistics and data.
0:44.8	President Joe Biden addressed crime during the State of the Union address and he said
0:49.2	that we have a historically low murder rate from 2023 in the United States a significant decline
0:55.2	in violent crime more broadly one of the lowest levels in 50 years and that is
1:00.4	absolutely the case it is also the case that when the overall crime rate goes down,
1:06.4	it doesn't necessarily go down everywhere
1:08.6	or by the same amount.
1:10.3	And if individuals see crime or are the victims of crime, it doesn't really matter to them,
1:16.8	understandably, if as a country it is 20% less violent, if you were the victim of a violent crime,
1:23.8	you care about it.
1:24.8	It still affects you and that makes sense.
1:26.8	But this gets us to public perception
1:28.7	versus statistics.
