So we started kind of paying attention. We'd go to shops, we'd look at fins.

0:03.0

Every time we'd see someone in the lineup, we'd ask them to turn their board upside down so we could look at the fins. And we realized, wow, this is far behind what it should be. Okay. And we can improve this. So we started manufacturing fins and working on that, you know, about the whole... This is Jamin Luoto, co-founder of Naked Viking Surf, talking about the foiling of their fins. NACA, which is like the predecessor to NASA and some of their like

aerodynamic and wind and fluid dynamic principles to the fins.

0:28.6

Basically we refine the leading edge so you don't have a massive kind of shoulder

0:34.6

off the leading edge that leads water to get kicked off in a way that

0:40.3

leads to turbulence you have a turbulence coming off of the leading edge of the fin and you

0:45.5

get cavitation which leads to negative pressure and kind of the shadow area and that

0:51.5

causes drag it slows you down it's bad enough sometimes on Finzi.

0:55.6

You'll actually get like a humming.

0:57.3

Mm-hmm.

0:57.8

I don't know if you've noticed that.

0:58.6

I have.

0:59.2

So we focused on reducing that leading at shoulder

1:02.7

and actually have it be more like the wing of like a highly aerodynamic airplane.

1:14.5

Jay. a highly aerodynamic airplane. Jamin comes from a neuroscience background where he spent a fair bit of time studying physics

and fluid dynamics.

1:20.5

While working in academia, he met Leif.

1:23.3

Well, it's Leif, I'll let you.

1:25.9

It's pronounced Leif.

1:27.4

Sorry, Jamin met Leif Braun, who had encountered an issue with a reafferone. Well, it's Laif, I'll let you. It's pronounced Laif.

1:48.8

Sorry, Jamin met Laif Braun, who had encountered an issue with a recent surfboard purchase. I had picked up a board, I don't know, 10-ish years ago in one of the selling points of the shop. I was just browsing. I saw something I liked. Like, we'll throw in a set of fens. Cool. It was two plastic fens and the fiberglass fend that'd been kind of half-assed resin board over it.

1:54.8

And I realized these things aren't terribly expensive to manufacture, but if that's what people are resorting to to get by, there's probably a little bit of a hole in the industry.
