Summary

Is group therapy really helping, or is it keeping you stuck? In this episode, I explore the hidden downsides of group therapy and why it might not be the answer you think it is. While it can offer connection and validation, many people find themselves trapped in an emotional echo chamber—repeating the same struggles rather than finding solutions. I discuss the difference between those seeking support and those seeking real change, and how to break free from therapy that's not serving you.

If you've ever felt frustrated by group therapy or unsure whether it's working for you, this episode will give you the clarity you need. Let's talk about what actually leads to growth and transformation!

Hello everyone and welcome back to another episode of The Truth About Mental Health. Now, today's

0:04.9

episode, it's a big one and it's the one that I've been dying to cover for so many reasons.

0:10.3

And if I'm being honest, it's been triggered by so many of my clients who've shared their

0:14.5

own experiences with group therapy. So let's get into it. Now, we all know what group therapy is, right? On the surface,

0:25.5

it's the supportive healing environment where people can come together to share their experiences

0:29.9

and find comfort knowing that they're not alone. And honestly, for a lot of people, it really does

0:34.9

tick the right boxes. You think about it, being in a room

0:37.9

with others who truly get it, who validate your emotions, who can relate to what you're going

0:43.3

through. Now, that in itself is powerful, and that's what a lot of people need at certain points

0:48.7

in their life. But here's the thing, and here's my therapist thing. As a therapist, I've worked one-on-one

0:55.6

with countless clients who have tried the group therapy, and they've ended up walking away

1:00.6

with something completely different to what they expected. A whole other experience that they

1:05.2

did not expect. Now, of course, while everyone's story is unique, there are some striking

1:10.6

similarities in what my clients have told me, which is what prompted today's podcast.

1:16.3

Now, starting group therapy usually starts with optimism. You attend your first session and at first it feels good.

1:22.8

You feel seen, you feel understood, you feel supportive. and there's relief in knowing that you're not

1:28.0

alone. But then there's a shift that happens over time. And what I generally tend to find

1:33.2

is that the initial relief starts to morph into something just a little bit more complicated.

1:38.4

Now from what clients have told me, they actually start to feel anxious about each session.

1:43.1

So when that run up to a session starts,

1:45.2

they can feel their anxieties beginning to kick in. They tend to worry about themselves,

1:50.3

they worry about others, they worry about the stories that might be shared in the group setting,
