This is the Baimal Podcast with Marty Solomon. I'm his co-host, Brent Billings. Today, we dive into the 19th chapter of John and his account of Jesus' crucifixion.

Yes, indeed. We have arrived at the same spot I had fits with in session three. Brent, I just hate doing this episode. It's because the story just hits a different wavelength for me. I don't like to teach through the historical context of the crucifixion.

I don't know if it's my fundamentalist evangelical upbringing. I still got all this penal substitutionary atonement stuff rolling around inside my gut. I don't know. It's just this like, I don't know. It's just this holy story. And I never know how to deal with it. But alas, we said, every verse.

So I suppose we go through every verse. And John's got some unique aspects that we'll be able to chat about today. But this is one of those episodes. I just feel uncomfortable with. And we'll just let that be. We'll give word to that. We'll name it.

And then we'll let it be and everybody can just struggle on with me as we go through it. How about that? Sounds great. I'm sure you got all kinds of NET footnotes today. You'll make it all the...

You'll have all kinds of juicy stuff to bring up. There's definitely some. There's, you know, there's a number where it's like, here's five possibilities on what this could be talking about.

So really, you're probably going to want to go through them yourself, dear listeners. And look at all of those passages and come into your own conclusions because there's a lot going on here.

And a lot of them are a little bit ambiguous as far as what John could potentially be pointing to. Yep. Yep.

Absolutely. Or Jesus for that matter. Sure. Yeah.

So just to set the context, John 18 at the end, Jesus has been having a conversation with pilot. And pilot comes out and says, I can't figure out anything. This guy's done wrong.

But you guys tell me what you want to do. And he's like, well, give us, they said, give us Bravis. And so that is the end of John 18. And so that is where we continue on today. Great.

Then pilot took Jesus and had him flogged. And there's our first footnote. There's apparently three different levels of beatings that someone could endure.

And this is potentially the most severe of them. Although, I guess the language is not exactly...

I think because this is Greek and those three levels are Latin that there's some potential differences there, but you can read that footnote. It's huge.

The soldiers twisted together a crown of thorns and put it on his head. They clothed him in a purple robe and went up to him again and again saying, Hail King of the Jews. And they slapped him in the face.

Nothing to say, home ready. I got nothing. I mean, it's obvious here in these opening verses.

This is an absolute like it. This is a mocking like they've got a purple robe purple the color of royalty. They're obviously putting on to mock him.

You know, you think you're a king. You say you're a king. Let us treat you like a king. I'm sure it was probably...

It couldn't have been a nice purple robe. Whether it was covered in drenched in urine or feces. That shows up in the...

They lift up a sponge. It says on a his up branch. Now, you can't really put a sponge up.

It's not going to be sturdy enough branch to put a sponge up on. So what that means is a sponge has his up on it.
