Summary

This week we finish our talk with Jim’s friend and colleague Renee Williams who is Executive Director of the National Center for the Victims of Crime in Washington D.C.

Renee talks about prison reform, and how some victims might surprise us in what they want for offenders. She also mentions her partnership with Van Jones’ Dream Corps. Laura brings up the horrific case of Colleen Stan who was held prisoner in a box for seven years. Jim talks about the problems with recidivism.

That same year that I graduated from college and was on my way to play professional basketball overseas, I became a victim of gun violence.

I was shot twice in my back during arm robbery and those bullets ended my basketball career.

I was having my last doctor's appointment. I'm to remove the bullets out of my back.

I remember my doctor. I started to tell me a story of a young man from my community.

This young man was 14 years old when he became a victim of gun violence and my doctor saved his life.

As a result of that shooting, this young man at age of 14 years old lost sight in his left eye.

The more details that my doctor shared about this young man, my heart started beating faster and faster.

I realized he was describing the young man that shot me.

He was released from the hospital just like I was. He was back into that same community without any support, any mental health services to help him heal and deal with the trauma that he was experiencing.

I honestly believe that that young man's under-judged trauma resulted in further victimization with me being shot.

The cycle of violence in communities and rip apart communities across the country and at crime survivors for safety and justice, we're working to help change that.

Survivors of crime in communities had heard by crime and incarceration.

The not express what often gets attributed to them, which is they want more punishment, long sentences and increased incarceration.

In fact, survivors communicated to us that they want prevention and they want healing and investments in their communities that stopped who caused the crime.

The voice of the other end of the phone told me that my daughter had been murdered and that my grandson had been murdered.

He was in kindergarten. Initially, I froze. I just froze when I was notified.

And over time, I got to meet people that were engaged in restorative justice. It opened up for me an even bigger picture. We could make a difference.

Mass incarceration doesn't work. It doesn't make us safer. It breeds more violence.

We need to heal more than just the individuals and just the families we need to heal communities.

This, to me, is something that can happen.
