Summary
We realized the perils of a hurricane-force tailwind before this amazing holiday episode! To celebrate the season, we opened up the mailbag to answer listener questions on all sorts of topics.
Topics this week: what we’d save from a fire, a hot-tub experiment follow-up, Megan’s exciting news, whether we’d ever try triathlon, a vest that ejects gels, heat training submersion levels, hemoglobin A1C and REDs, iron supplementation, uphill treadmill effort and timing, scheduling rest days, a supplement hypothetical, Nomio v. sodium bicarbonate, cycling metrics, running power meters, running form changes, tart cherry juice hacks, training on a through-hike, limiting aid station support, and a beautiful listener corner message.
Thank you so much for being here in 2025! May your holidays be like the water in our hot tub: ELECTRIC.
We love you all! HUZZAH!

| 0:01.5 | Welcome to the Some Work All Play podcast. We are so happy with you today. Happy Tuesday. It's Tuesday. And I'm gathering all our best belongings on this Tuesday. Our best belongings. What are you talking about? I'm talking about the fact that on Friday, we had a high wind warning. And we had high winds. And alongside the high wind warning, they told us they're like, this is high fire time. And please gather all your best belongings. Okay. Yeah, that did happen. |
| 0:23.3 | And I'm kind of ashamed about what happened next. You're like, I know where this is going. Yeah, I had to follow the thread. And now I'm like, oh, man, you see what happens in times of crisis, in times of natural disaster. Okay. So, for those that don't know, Boulder had extreme wins all last week. They shut down |
| 0:38.2 | our power prophylactically multiple times. So we were just surviving last week. And we were left to |
| 0:44.5 | think about, okay, if a fire starts, we don't have cell reception or anything. We're going to have |
| 0:49.3 | to move fast and get out of here in the car and can only bring what we put in our car. And so we planned ahead |
| 0:55.1 | and we stuffed the car with our most precious belongings. And I'm kind of unhappy about what I did. |
| 1:00.8 | And it was your 25, 2017 pairs of ASU ones, the Agravac Speed Ultras. You were just coming up from |
| 1:07.7 | the basement where all of these are stored. You're like, I need to store these in like a well-climitized area. And you're walking up from the basement stairs with there's boxes after boxes of shoes. And very seriously, this is not a joke. I should have taken this as like an Instagram, you know, stacking them in our car. Yeah, yeah, yeah. So, okay, a computer, let's say. Everything's on the cloud. I don't need |
| 1:29.1 | the computer. You know, kids' belongings, pictures, stuff like that. You know, all of it's on |
| 1:34.0 | electronic devices now. But I cannot replace the Agravex Speed Ultra once. Like, I got all of the ones |
| 1:40.7 | in existence. I think there's like 15 of them. I got them all in clearance. And so if there was a fire, it's my like children. I hate it. You needed them. We actually had the hypothetical discussion. I was like, David, if our house burned down, do you think Adidas will replace all 21 of these shoes? It's like we're donating to the David Roach Foundation. I don't think so. I think I've shat too much on the ASU2s for them to ever do anything for me again. Yeah, it's interesting follow-up. I saw an review of the ASU-2s that just argued, oh, they might be a little bit heavier, but they're light on your feet. I'm like, what bullshit is that? They're literally heavier. It doesn't matter what your feelings are about actual facts as it comes to shoes. So yeah, I'm going to save ASU ones at all costs. Well, it's a good thing that they're lighter because you were stacking them in our car. Did you bring them back inside? Because you've been very concerned about climate control and not taking the shoes. This is like, you don't even handle our children this way. No, no, no. You're like concerned about taking them out of their packaging so that they don't lose their pop. And I feel like you're like the shoes guardian angel at this point. Yeah, I'd be much less likely to bounce a pair of shoes and mess them up than to bounce one of our children. Relevant. That's a little bit too real. We're not going to get into that. They're okay. Yeah, yeah. So they're stored in a perfect 65 degree temperature in their boxes. I have an Instagram real idea that I want to do with all these shoes, but I'm hesitant to do it because that would mean that I take them out of their boxes and it might mess up their shelf life a little bit. I'm very precious about this. I literally think these shoes are the only reason I've ever accomplished anything. And those accomplishments have led directly to like our financial well-being in the future for our children. So Megan, this is not just for me. This is for our family. This is for the kids that I bounce all the time. |
| 3:25.5 | Well, you should do it for the content. |
| 3:27.2 | Yeah. |
| 3:27.5 | I feel like it's like the feedback loop. Yeah, you should do the real for content. That being said, though, the wind was so strong this week. And you decided you're like, I'm going to go run out to Wonderland, which is like your normal run out. And usually for us, that's like into the wind on the way out. |
| 3:39.3 | Is this the shit on David intro? |
| 3:40.8 | Yeah, usually. |
| 3:41.6 | Okay. |
| 3:42.0 | I feel like this. |
| 3:42.7 | We're just following the trend. |
| 3:44.4 | Okay. run out. And usually for us, that's like into the wind. Is this the shit on David intro? Usually. I think like this. We're just following the trend. You give me so much content. |
| 3:46.3 | Yeah. What am I supposed to do? When overthinking goes wrong on this story. So on Friday, |
