Welcome to the Bible study podcast. I'm your host, Chris Christensen. I want to look somewhat today at the faith of David,

and I want to look at it through David's own words in Psalm 40. Psalm 40 goes like this.

I waited patiently for the Lord. He turned to me and heard my cry. He lifted me out of the slimy pit.

Out of the mud and mire, he set my feet on a rock and gave me a firm place to stand.

He put a new song in my mouth, a hymn of praise to our God. Many will see and fear the Lord

and put their trust in Him. Blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord,

who does not look to the proud, to those who turn aside to false gods. Many, Lord, my God,

are the wonders you have done, the things you planned for us, none can compare with. Were I to speak

and tell of your deeds, they would be too

many to declare. Let's just look at those first five verses to start with here. Now, David's life,

we know from reading elsewhere and from the study we did earlier last year, had its ups and its downs.

David was considered a man after God's own heart, but

sometimes he really, really screwed up. And sometimes he was in trouble, and it was nothing that he

had done. And so just a quick pass through his life, in case you have forgotten, remember,

he is born into a family of shepherds. He is a shepherd,

and he kills the bear in the line. He shows courage early on. And then his first big entrance into

the stage of Israel is when he kills Goliath. Goliath, who has been taunting the armies of God in Israel, and David happens to come only to bring

his older brother's lunch. And he sees this Goliath challenging the Lord's people, and he says,

I will fight Goliath. And then his fame rises. Saul, who's the king, gets jealous. David's running

for his life now. And then later on, David becomes king. Things are good. And then David sees Bathsheba. Things are bad. And then David's son tries to kill him. And he's running for his life again. And so his life has ups and downs. The first time he's running for his life, not his own fault, the second time as a result of the sin that

he committed. And so we have this complex life. And David's Psalms are full of this emotional
