We are fortunate to have Joel Nig with us who will explain the ins and outs of an accurate diagnosis.

A solid diagnosis is absolutely key to getting the right treatment.

Dr. Nigg is professor of psychiatry, behavior, neuroscience, and Pediatrics at Oregon Health and Science

University. He is the author of the highly reviewed book, What Causes AdHD.

Dr. Neg will give some introductory remarks about ADHD

diagnosis and then take your questions. So welcome Dr. Nigg and I turn it over to

I'm going to begin by just giving some fundamental review on ADHD diagnosis

and I'm going to then move on to some immediate questions and controversies about

diagnosis and then we'll throw it open to questions from the audience after about 10 minutes or so.

First of all, the key elements of a diagnosis,

I just want to walk through these

and make sure everyone is aware of them.

As Wayne alluded to, it's important to get the diagnosis right.

Sometimes people underestimate the importance of actually doing the diagnosis of ADHD and

I just want to highlight that it can be a problem to either fail

to make the diagnosis or to make the diagnosis incorrectly.

Failing to spot it can lead the child to or the failing to the adult,

or the adult to unnecessary poor outcomes

that could be prevented or improved
