Summary

Ever wondered how to truly support your kids through their unique challenges? In this episode, we chat with Justin Reeves, a dedicated educator and school administrator who believes in celebrating every step of students' progress. Justin emphasizes the importance of recognizing all forms of achievement, from significant academic milestones to smaller personal victories, and how overcoming obstacles with a positive mindset can make a big difference. Drawing from his own experiences and a powerful encounter with Aaron Ralston—who, after a life-threatening situation, chose to thank the boulder that trapped him—Justin shares valuable insights on staying optimistic. He reminds us of his favorite quote from the band 311: “Stay positive and love your life.” This conversation is a heartfelt reminder to appreciate each teen’s journey and encourage them to stay positive, no matter the challenges they face. Okay, Justin, I'm so excited to have you on the podcast today and I feel like I know you, but I don't think I've ever actually met you in person, but I know and love your wife dearly.

0:23.4

She's one of my really good friends.

0:25.3

So Justin, for anyone who's not familiar with you,

0:28.6

can you just introduce yourself

0:30.9

and tell us a little bit about who you are and what you do?

0:33.6

Yeah, my name is Justin Reeves.

0:35.8

Most people, I'm just Ashley's husband to a lot of people

0:38.8

because my wife does a lot of work online,

0:40.8

so she's pretty popular. But I'm an assistant principal at a high school. I've been working in

0:46.4

education since I started teaching in 2008 about seven years in I switched over to administration. I've got a wife four kids a dog and I'm a pretty positive person I enjoy life and I really enjoy when you and Ashley do content together and I get to see your personality and I have to start off by saying that I'm sure this was totally stereotypically wrong but as a high school student I always envisioned the

1:15.6

administrators as being like people that just read leather books by themselves

1:21.0

like on the weekends and had kind of no personality and you are the opposite of that like you and Ashley are so fun

1:27.6

So I want to know, you know, what led you into this career path because it seems like you are a really fun person and you know maybe I don't know maybe I don't know maybe I just completely had it wrong as a high school student do you think or do you think that?

1:46.7

Yeah because I remember looking at my I actually didn't get to know my principals very well when I was in high school as a student

1:52.0

but that's because I was I was like never in

1:53.9

trouble so I never really interacted with them but it's sad that like we think if like you only see the

1:57.8

principal when you're in trouble so I try to go out of my way and make sure that's not the case

2:01.5

so for example like on Fridays at our school I've I've purchased some

2:06.5

arcades and so I'll just I'll put them out the commons during lunch and kids will come out and I'll play

2:10.8

X-Men or NBA Jam with them and get to know them. I try to be fun. I know I know school is not something people like are excited to go to and so when I when I went into teaching so originally I was going to college to be a photographer.

2:22.8

I loved photography all through high school.

2:24.6

I was on the yearbook.
