Listener Jacob Sanker from Philadelphia, who now lives in Haifa Israel, wrote me,

Hey Guy, Shalom, Jacob. I've been listening to you almost since I moved to Israel from the States in 2013.

My Hebrew is pretty good now, which is why I switched to the Plus show, that said I would love it if you did an episode just on the word

hooray he reshyud hooray I know it's a little fancy but I actually hear people say it

all the time and it seems to have different meanings depending on when and how it's used.

Todad Jacob, yala, hare, he Rashud. It's a tiny elusive word so we're going to work through several examples to get the feel of it. You surely know? After all you do know that. We use the word hare to emphasize

something which the person we're speaking with already knows or should know.

The other day this was said on the radio,

Ha re-Lama-Mhemossu-Soue.

It was said by someone explaining the rationale behind someone else's actions.

Ha-hare Lamme Masuet-Mossu-Ze means,

well you know why they did it, right?

It was because blah, blah, blah.

So again, the speaker assumes that the reasoning is obvious but goes on to explain it anyway.

When we use the negation, hare lo, it means something like surely it's not like in an almost uncertain manner.

For example, who are a law al-e leachlim call it ab-hahit, who are a lahole-lachlim call Eta Abate, surely is not going to sell the house.

I don't suppose he plans to sell the house.

We believe he's not going to sell the house, right?
