So here's what happens.

People read Beowulf, they come across things that don't seem like they belong to modern Christianity.

Or even like, let's say, late medieval Roman Catholicism.

And so they say, well, this must be a pagan leftover.

Yeah.

So my question is, well, is it a pagan leftover, which would be fine.

I wouldn't really be bothered by that.

But is it a leftover?

Or is it the Beowulf poet using his Christianity, Anglo-Saxon Christianity, right? Which was

his framework to try to make sense of the world that he had had inherited from both his Christian

and his pagan forebearers.
