I hunt down the government's mess-ups written by Tall Lemon I've been thinking about whether to do this for a long time and not because I'm worried

about what happens to me. The office will

not come from me because the office does not work that way. The most effective classification

system ever invented is not a locked file cabinet or a server behind a firewall. It is the certainty that anything I say publicly will be dismissed as fiction.

I could describe every job that I've ever worked in exact detail, and posted on the internet

and the result would be that a few thousand people would read it, and most of them would assume

that it's made up.

That is the security model.

Public disbelief.

It has never failed.

For the past eight years, I have worked for a division of the federal government that doesn't

have a public-facing name.

I call it the office.

On paper, it operates under the Department of the Interior.

In practice, it answers to a small interagency committee that I have never met

and communicate with only through my handler,

a woman named Delia Marsh. My job if it had a title would be something like containment or

recovery specialist. In plain language, I find things the government created or caused or allowed to happen,

and I deal with them before the public finds out.

Before the office, I spent 12 years as a wildlife management officer for the state of Wyoming.
