Alright, so as you guys were recall, in the last show we talked about how the initial

threat to Vicksburg developed in mid-May 1862 when the first ship of the Federal's West

Gulf blockading squadron, commanded by David Farragut, arrived below the city and demanded

the place to surrender.

The Confederate commander replied defiantly, Mississippians don't know and refuse to learn

how to surrender to an enemy.

And so a simple show forced by the Federal's obviously wasn't going to work like it had

at Baton Rouge in that chez.

That defiant response and the Confederate batteries up on Vicksburg's bluffs were proof

of that.

On top of that, Farragut was 400 miles above New Orleans.

His squadron didn't have the number of troops he would need to take and hold Vicksburg.

And the Union gunboats from upriver that were supposed to rendezvous with him were

nowhere to be seen.

So on May 26th, Farragut withdrew back downstream to New Orleans.
