The story that I've shared on Leaving Eden has been most parts of my life story.

I think the Russell Anderson story is kind of a weird and

out there expression of what was so common for me growing up in the IFB. It's all a glaring

symptom of a huge problem.

On today's episode, I'm sitting down with Sadie Carpenter.

Sadie is the co-host of the immensely popular Leaving Eden podcast.

And while Sadie has been very open about her experience growing up within the independent fundamental Baptist movement, there's one story in particular she has never shared publicly. We have a

conversation about this particular experience and use it as a launch pad to have a broader

conversation about the nature of grooming within the IFB. The organization, Raine, which stands for

rape, abuse, and incest national network, defines grooming as manipulative

behaviors that the abuser uses to gain access to a potential victim, coerce them to agree

to the abuse, and reduce the risk of being caught. Grooming often follows the pattern of

victim selection, gaining access and isolating the victim, trust development and keeping secrets,

desensitation to touch and discussion of sexual topics, and attempt by abusers to make their

behavior seem natural. While Sadie's particular story did not end in physical abuse, a clear

pattern of grooming did take place, leaving the door wide open to some very dangerous possibilities.

Sadie believes her story is important and that many women who are raised inside the independent

fundamental Baptist movement will likely identify with much of her story.
