0:00.0	The Christ in the Gospels is quite merciful.
0:12.2	And one of Jung's propositions was that there's an ancient line of religious thinking that
0:17.2	has mercy and justice as the two hands of God.
0:21.4	Too much mercy is the devouring mother.
0:23.9	Everything's okay.
0:24.9	No one's ever called to account.
0:26.3	And so no one ever matures and takes responsibility.
0:29.6	Not justice without mercy is too harsh because we all fall short of the mark.
0:34.3	So God rules with a balance of justice and mercy.
0:37.6	And the Christ in the Gospels, although there's hints of temper and judgment, he's presented
0:42.4	in quite a merciful manner.
0:43.7	But in that revelation, he's a judge.
0:46.0	It's like, no, you're unworthy and the select are few.
0:50.4	And you think, well, what does that mean?
0:51.8	It's like, well, imagine sorting yourself out into the select and the unworthy.
0:59.4	Most of you is select, but I doubt it.
1:02.2	And you certainly aren't going to start that way.
1:05.7	Nothing that isn't approximating the ideal is select.
1:08.9	So in any case, his proposition was that every ideal is a judge.
1:17.3	And that makes perfect sense because an ideal is something to which you aspire.
1:23.7	And the gap between you and that ideal, if it's your ideal, is felt as judgment.
1:30.7	And so that's one of the reasons people are very afraid to have an ideal to make it.
