I guess you could say there are two components to today's podcast.

First, the terrible story of FBI and DOJ misconduct in a case in which they framed a man as a spy with false evidence. But an interesting subcomponent of a story is what was really going on behind the scenes

with me at CBS News as I covered this fascinating and outrageous story. It starts around 1999. I was assigned to cover news stories at the

CBS News Washington, D.C. Bureau. I had come from the CBS News New York offices, and how I came to be in

Washington, D.C. and then how I kind of stumbled across this big story is a bit of a

twisted tale. After I had worked at CBS News, the national CBS News at the headquarters in New York,

for about a year, I had been promised after a year on the overnight shift anchoring that at the

end of the year, I would have a different assignment, but the one year on the overnight shift wasoring, that at the end of the year, I would have a different assignment,

but the one year on the overnight shift was to help get that program in order and to establish
