From the writer of The Devil Wears Prada is written onto the poster of 27 Dresses, the movie we are covering today.

It essentially could say, not your mother's rom-com.

This is going to be a rom-com with a lot of fun fashion and with more than a hint of cynicism.

Written and directed and edited all by women, this 2008 film was made for $30 million

and brought in $162.7 million.

It got mostly negative reviews.

Peter Howell from the Toronto star said that the film, quote,

shamelessly trades on the horriest of chip flick clichés.

He also criticized Eileen Brosh-McKennanah, the screenwriter, for filling the script with, quote,

cheap gags instead of the savage wit and genuine insight she brought to the shallowness of

modern life in the devil wears Prada. I agree with the reviews. I usually pause at this point in an opening essay to tell you

how much I love the movie we are about to cover. But I do not think the 27 dresses is a good movie.

I love Catherine Hegel and James Marsden, the romantic hero in the movie.

I also love Aileen Brosh McKenna, who went on to write Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, and the director, Anne Fletcher, who also directed Step Up, The Proposal and Dumplin.

Three movies I adore.

And yet, I am always in the mood to watch 27 dresses as lukewarm as I am about it.

I watched it this past weekend, and I'll watch it again right now.

The clothes are so pretty.

Catherine Hegel, James Marsden, Judy Greer, Edward Burns, Malin Ackerman.

Who am I mad at here?

No one.

It is a charm sauce that has been burnt, but whatever, it still goes down easy.
