Mark 9: 38-43, 45, 47-48 - 'Do not stop anyone from working a miracle in my name.'

Catechism of the Catholic Church Paragraphs:

- 1034 (in 'Hell') - Jesus often speaks of "Gehenna" of "the unquenchable fire" reserved for those who to the end of their lives refuse to believe and be converted, where both soul and body can be lost. Jesus solemnly proclaims that he "will send his angels, and they will gather . . . all evil doers, and throw them into the furnace of fire," and that he will pronounce the condemnation: "Depart from me, you cursed, into the eternal fire!"

Hi everyone. Welcome back again to the Logical Bible Study podcast. Today we have quite a long reading. So we're

0:17.1

going to get straight into it. This is the reading you would hear at today's Mass, so it's the gospel reading.

0:23.2

And then we're going to go through it verse by verse to see if we can understand what it means.

0:27.9

And there's a whole lot of really interesting stuff in this one.

0:30.4

So Mark chapter 9, verses 38 to 43, verse 45, and verses 47 to 48. John said to Jesus, verse 45 and verses 47 to 48.

0:39.7

John said to Jesus, Master, we saw a man who is not one of us casting out devils in your name,

0:47.5

and because he was not one of us, we tried to stop him. But Jesus said, you must not stop him.

0:54.8

No one who works a miracle in my name is likely to speak evil of me.

1:00.5

Anyone who is not against us is for us.

1:03.9

If anyone gives you a cup of water to drink just because you belong to Christ, then I tell

1:09.0

you solemnly, he will most certainly not lose his reward.

1:14.6

But anyone who is an obstacle to bring down one of these little ones who have faith

1:19.3

would be better thrown into the sea with a great milkstone round his neck. And if your hand

1:25.6

should cause you to sin, cut it off off it is better for you to enter into

1:30.1

life crippled than to have two hands and go to hell into the fire that cannot be put out

1:36.1

and if your foot should cause you to sin cut it off it is better for you to enter into life

1:42.6

lame than to have two feet and be thrown into hell

1:46.2

and if your eye should cause you to sin tear it out it is better for you to enter into the

1:52.3

kingdom of God with one eye than to have two eyes and be thrown into hell where their worm does

1:58.9

not die nor their fire go out.

2:04.1

So that's a reading today from Mark and what's interesting about this is we have a whole lot

2:08.7

of interesting teachings in and of themselves that have been put together here by Mark
