Summary

From an early age, drummer Areif Sless-Kitain exhibited a stunning level of musical maturity and a distinctive creative voice. Joe witnessed this firsthand when he saw Areif perform with Regulator Watts in Milwaukee in 1996. Areif and Joe crossed paths a few years later, when Joe succeeded Areif in the DC band that later became Medications. The two old friends re-connect, and Areif discusses his path from DC to Philly to Chicago; his work as a music writer; and his creative approach in Brokeback and The Eternals.

1:35.2	I'm going to be a reef, Sless Katain. I was born in Rays in Philly. I grew up in an area called Marion on the main line of Philadelphia.
1:40.2	And that's, I think like I've heard that drummer, Brian from Lightning
1:47.1	Bolt, kind of grew up in the same neighborhood too. The kids that turned me on, like in
1:51.7	high school, the kids that turned me on to like punk rock, discord, fugazi and all that stuff
1:56.8	were from my, from what I know, they learned about that stuff from him so there's like this
2:02.9	indirect connection Brian Chippendale I've never uh I guess we're kind of label mates now actually
2:08.2	with thrill jockey but I still have yet to meet him in person but yeah Philly we're is where I grew up

2:20.5	My dad was mostly in advertising when I was growing up.
2:26.5	My parents both kind of come from art backgrounds.
