Summary

JOIN TSL WORKSHOPS: https://tslworkshops.circle.so Meg was already a fan of Jeff Hiller from his Emmy-winning performance in SOMEBODY SOMEWHERE, but after listening to his moving and hilarious memoir Actress of a Certain Age, she fell completely in love with his honesty, humor, and heart. She knew she had to have him on the show — and we were deeply honored when he said yes, fresh off his big Emmy win. In this conversation, Jeff opens up about the myth of the “big break,” finding your authentic voice, navigating rejection with grace, and why it’s never too late to chase your dreams. 1:04.5

Every day I got to have a little sunbeam of joy named Jeff Hiller enter my life. And I was so sad when it was over. Truly, I was like, oh, my God, what am I going to do now? It's done that I just called our producers. And I was like, we have to have them on the show. I have to meet him. So welcome, Jeff Hiller. Oh, my gosh. Thank you. That was such a good intro.

1:44.9

I was like, man, I'm good. I'm good. All right. We're going to start by talking about our weeks or what we like to call adventures and screenwriting. I'll go first. Super easy, Jeff. You're going to be much more interesting than mine. Okay. So for the past couple of weeks on this show, I've been telling you I've been waiting for notes and I got them. I got them yesterday, people. Yesterday I got them. And, you know, I was telling you all, I hate notes because I'm worried about getting the boot, you know, the boot right in your face where you're like, what?

2:01.5

I didn't get a boot. Well, not that we think. I don't think so. I have to look at the notes again. But there was no kind of shocking, what? They were very respectful. They were excited. And the truth is, even as I was listening to the notes, I was like, yeah, that's probably right. Yeah, we should probably do that. Yeah, okay, I have enough distance from it now.

2:18.5

Yeah, it's probably overcomplicated.

2:20.6

And yeah, we could probably

2:22.3

lose that character. Could we lose that character? Yeah, we probably could. So I felt very open on the call,

2:26.7

which is not like me, by the way. But I think it was because they were so open and respectful and

2:32.9

good at their notes that I was able to do that.

2:36.3

You know, of course, there's moments you're like, okay, we have to re-outline this whole thing.

2:42.4

But my manager's advice is, okay, and I have a writing partner, Joe, and his advice to both of us was,

2:50.4

you know, for a week, don't do anything.
