Summary

00:00:00 - Something a little different this week as Ryan presents some audio from a project he did with the startup Anchor.fm earlier this year producing some science segments for a channel called Organized CuriosityHe's drinking a Manta Ray from Ballast Point Brewing Company, which will become relevant later, but for now, here are the topics that get covered:

00:03:40 - First up, an explanation of the station and why I chose the name Organized Curiosity. (Spoiler: It's from a quote in Zora Neale Hurston's autobiography)
00:07:14 - Better know a root: astro-
00:09:33 - News you probably cannot use: Monkeys pass the mirror self-recognition test
00:12:41 - Bio bios: Mexican blindcat (Prietella phreatophila)
00:15:48 - Q&A: What is a theory?
00:18:37 - Falsifiability response from Ian Shapiro
00:19:43 - My response on falsifiability
00:24:46 - Bio bios: Indian vulture (Gyps indicus)
00:29:56 - News you probably cannot use: NASA announces new exoplanets
00:35:08 - Better know a root: osteo-
00:37:58 - Bio bios: Pygmy devilray (Mobula eregoodootenkee)
00:42:53 - News you probably cannot use: What the deep ocean sounds like
00:47:01 - Bio bios: Gemsbok (Oryx gazella)
00:50:19 - Q&A: How do animals know what to do?
00:56:03 - Finally, we end with a quick PaleoPOW thanking Billy Nitro for his recurring PayPal donation and his sweet sweet radio voice. Thanks, Billy!

Hello and welcome to Science Sort of episode 266.

0:28.9

Our theme this week is Anchors Away, Part 1.

0:31.6

I'm your host, Ryan, and joining me to talk about things that are science, things that are sort of science, and things they wish they were science, is just me.

0:35.9

But sort of a different iteration of me, because for the month

0:38.0

of March this year, I was involved with this startup called Anchor that was trying to make a new

0:43.6

style of sort of democratized audio. You may have even seen me promoting my involvement if you follow

0:49.3

me on Twitter. And what they were looking for were these short, no longer than five minutes,

0:53.6

segments produced a few times a day.

0:55.8

And I was pretty excited to give it a shot. If you listen to this show often, you know I'm a pretty talkative guy.

1:01.1

But it took me a surprisingly long time and more effort than I thought it would to kind of find my voice when it's just me alone with a microphone.

1:08.7

And after deciding on a station name, which was organized curiosity,

1:12.3

and getting a very slick logo design, which is the album art for this episode so you can see

1:16.5

it in the show notes for this episode on ScienceWord.com, I came up with some recurring segments

1:20.4

and was ready to start producing content. Now, one of the features of Anchor is that the content

1:24.1

goes away after 24 hours. But the cool thing is I owned all the content I was producing. So I figured I'd at least be able to share some of the segments I'd been making in a batch

1:30.9

or two here on the podcast. While my station is still technically there on anchor, I've been busy

1:35.7

enough that I haven't really been able to produce new content there for a bit. And maybe I'll get back

1:39.6

to it because as you're about to hear, I think I was able to make something that was distinct from science, sort of,

1:44.8

but still captures my passion for science outreach.

1:47.6

And I would encourage you to check out their website,
