Summary

Today we’re going to nerd out about what enlightenment (or, if that word is triggering, let’s just call it “high doses of meditation”) can do to your brain — and, more practically, how we can derive these benefits even if we don’t plan to spend decades living in a cave. My guest is Rick Hanson, Ph.D., psychologist and author of the new book Neurodharma. We go into the deep end, yes, but we also get very down-to-earth, talking about how anyone, including you, can “reverse engineer enlightenment,” and have “Nirvana operationalized in your nervous system.” Quick note that this was recorded right before the pandemic, but enlightenment is evergreen. Hey, it's Dan. As you may already know, May is mental health awareness month, and while mental health is important every month, this month is an opportunity to share some resources that can really help.

0:11.0

So in that spirit, I want to tell you about some of the other podcasts I really admire and respect in this space.

0:18.0

The podcast's meditative story, a slight change of plans, last day and on being are all doing incredible work to advance mental health and explore the human condition.

0:30.0

And throughout this month, I'm going to share a little bit more about each one of those shows.

0:34.0

So this week, I want to share one of my favorite podcasts. It's called Meditative Story, and it blends immersive storytelling with gentle mindfulness prompts to help you improve your inner weather.

0:44.0

As you know, my own mental health improvements really began in earnest when I found meditation for myself. And since then, it's really become an invaluable tool to help me deal with anxiety and depression and just the regular ups and downs of life.

0:58.0

So the format of meditative story really feels like an intuitive way to experience mindfulness.

1:03.0

Every episode is also wrapped in a breathtaking musical score, which I personally find pretty relaxing. Some of the storytellers over on meditative story are people you might already know, including Sharon Salzburg, Christa Tippett, David Duchovny, and me, I actually recorded an episode with them myself not too long ago.

1:21.0

Others are newer voices, but every episode is really extremely cool. So many people who listen to the show have said that it's just a crucial resource for them in supporting their own mental health. And maybe you'll end up following meditative story wherever you get your podcast.

1:36.0

Hello, I'm Hannah and I'm SeruT. And we are the hosts of a Redhanded, a weekly true crime podcast.

1:42.0

Every week on Redhanded, we get stuck into the most talked about cases. From Idaho student killings, the Delphi murders, and our recent rundown of the Murdoch saga.

1:51.0

Last year, we also started a second weekly show, Shorthand, which is just an excuse for us to talk about anything we find interesting because it's our show and we can do what we like.

1:59.0

We've covered the death of Princess Diana, an unholy Quran written in Saddam Hussein's blood, the gruesome history of European witch hunting, and the very uncomfortable phenomenon of genetic sexual attraction.

2:09.0

Whatever the case, we want to know what pushes people to the extremes of human behavior. Like, can someone give consent to be cannibalized? What drives a child to kill? And what's the psychology of a terrorist?

2:20.0

Listen to Redhanded wherever you get your podcast. So, in access our bonus shorthand episodes exclusively on Amazon Music, or by subscribing to Wondry Plus in Apple Podcasts or the Wondry app.

From Wondry, flipping the bird, Elon versus Twitter, is a new podcast that unravels the fascinating story of Elon Musk's unexpected bid to buy Twitter, and all of the drama that has happened since.

2:42.0

Elon's influence is not only ushering in a new era of Twitter, but shaping the future of free speech on the internet as we know it.
