Summary

In Buddhism/meditation circles, desire or wanting is often considered a no-no. But is this line of thinking sometimes taken too far — or simply misunderstood? Can we turn our desires — for food, sex, etcetera — into areas to apply our meditation practice? Today we’re going to explore that notion with Cara Lai. She is a mindfulness teacher, psychotherapist, and artist. She is also a coach on the Ten Percent Happier app. (Side note: shout-out to all the coaches on the app. The fact that we have these highly trained individuals standing by to take your questions is yet another reason to subscribe!) Anyway, back to Cara. I first encountered her when I was on a retreat last year, and she was one of the teachers. She gave a dharma talk that was incredibly funny and shockingly honest. And, as you will hear, she brings that same spirit to this conversation. Where to find Cara Lai online: Website: http://www.caralai.org/ On the Ten Percent Happier app, you can chat directly with living, breathing meditation coaches (including Cara), about your meditation questions. Once you've downloaded the app at tenpercent.com, you can navigate to your profile, then click "Ask A Question" under the coaching section to be connected with one of our experienced coaches. Hey, it's Dan. As you may already know, May is mental health awareness month, and while mental health

0:05.0

is important every month, this month is an opportunity to share some resources that can really help.

0:10.9

So in that spirit, I want to tell you about some of the other podcasts I really admire and

0:15.9

respect in this space. The podcast's meditative story, a slight change of plans, last day, and on

0:24.6

being are all doing incredible work to advance mental health and explore the human condition.

0:30.1

And throughout this month, I'm going to share a little bit more about each one of those shows.

0:34.2

So this week, I want to share one of my favorite podcasts. It's called Meditative Story, and it

0:38.8

blends immersive storytelling with gentle mindfulness prompts to help you improve your inner weather.

0:44.4

As you know, my own mental health improvements really began in earnest when I found meditation

0:50.4

for myself. And since then, it's really become an invaluable tool to help me deal with anxiety

0:55.4

and depression and just the regular ups and downs of life. So the format of meditative story really

1:00.4

feels like an intuitive way to experience mindfulness. Every episode is also wrapped in a breathtaking

1:06.5

musical score, which I personally find pretty relaxing. Some of the storytellers over on meditative

1:11.2

story are people you might already know, including Sharon Salzburg, Chris DeTippet, David Duchovny,

1:17.3

and me. I actually recorded an episode with them myself not too long ago. Others are newer voices,

1:23.1

but every episode is really extremely cool. So many people who listen to the show have said that

1:28.4

it's just a crucial resource for them in supporting their own mental health, and maybe you'll end up

1:33.0

following meditative story wherever you get your podcast. Hello, I'm Hannah. And I'm Syrte.

1:38.4

And we are the hosts of A Redhanded, a weekly True Crime Podcast. Every week on Redhanded,

1:43.2

we get stuck into the most talked about cases. From Idaho student killings, the Delphi

1:47.6

murders, and our recent rundown of the Murdoch saga. Last year, we also started a second weekly show,

1:54.0

Shorthand, which is just an excuse for us to talk about anything we find interesting because
