Welcome to the happiness podcast. I'm Dr. Robert Puff. If we've lived long enough, we know that sooner or later things happen to people, perhaps even in ourselves, that are just hard to explain. They're challenging, they're difficult, and they're just hard.

And when these things happen, there's a question that we often ask ourselves and it's a good question, but it may not

be the best question. The question we ask ourselves is, why is this happening to me? I think it's a good question because it does

address the fact that something's going wrong, and we're not happy about that. And I think it's important that we don't suppress our feelings, we don't deny that everything's

fine when it isn't, because sometimes things happen to us and they are just very challenging.

Perhaps right now we got the cancer scare and we've learned that we have cancer.

Perhaps right now someone we deeply love is in a coma or is dying.

At the time of this recording the coronavirus has created a lot of fear in the world

and the stock market in the US has dropped

more than it's ever dropped in history and perhaps this is affecting our plans

for retirement or so many other things.

So life happens and sometimes things happen to us

that are very challenging, that are just hard hard and we do wonder why is this happening to us and

though it's a good question in the long run it may not be the most helpful question, because I think it can lead to things

that lead us to despair or anger are just a sense that life isn't fair and I don't understand it and I don't like it.

That part's okay when life is unfair.

We really don't like it.

We none of us do.

But what we want to do, if we want to live a happy life,

is find solutions to what's happening to us

and not get stuck in the quagmire of despair.

Because what happens with life is life doesn't guarantee that things are going to go a certain
