So welcome to part two of this two part, maybe even three parts, I don't know yet,

episode about what is Britishness and what I'm trying to do with these episodes is just try and look at

well what are the real elements of British culture what do let's say foreign

people how do foreign people understand Britain and how is that different to the way in which British people define their national identity and also generally speaking

How do you define a national identity and what are the issues and considerations that go along with that idea?

In part one, we looked at some of the things that I've noticed, my students and many other foreign people I've met

say and think about Britain and how they define Britishness from a sort of outsider's point of view and I kind of you know talked a little

bit about those ideas and in this one we're going to continue and actually look

at how British people define Britishness.

Okay, so when you actually ask the average British person

to define Britishness, I find that they always give certain stock answers

to this question too.

So we've got the kind of cliches and stereotypes

that come from non-British people,

but also British people have their own kind of quick answers

to this question as well.

As we know, it's very hard to truly define this concept.

So you end up listing various associations,

which don't fully deal with the whole subject in a satisfyingly complete way.
