Let's investigate. Hey, hey, hey, welcome back everybody for number three of the big four. Holy Cats, you're

ready for the fairway flapper, Edith Cummings. Yeah, I think I'm ready for anything called the

Fairway Flapper. The Fairway Flapper. I don't even know how to start Edith. Born in March 1899, daughter of David Mark

Cummings and Ruth Dexter. The family resided on the Gold Coast in Chicago. They owned a home in Lake

Forest at 1490 North Lake Road near Lake Forest Cemetery. Now the first thing to know about Edith Cummings, of course,

she's in the big four. She is known in history as the Fairway Flapper. She is also the inspiration

for the character Jordan Baker in the Great Gatsby by Fitzgerald. I'm going to go ahead for my

Gatsby people. Talk about this first at where she's mentioned in Gatsby.

So a little bit of backup here.

Cummings was born rich, married, as they used to say well,

and spent her adult life playing golf and giving away money.

She became a celebrity as a teenage debutante, part of a click called The Big Four.

Another member was her friend, Geneva King, Fitzgerald's first great love.

Cummings graced the cover of Time magazine on August 25th, 1924, as an emblem of her era.

Today, she's featured in a short documentary called Before Babe, The Women Who Changed Golf.

She played in a floppy hat and swung with a patrician rhythm that likely hypnotized Fitzgerald.

She was the fairway flapper.
