And what is political economy?

Political economy, generally speaking, looks at macroeconomic questions.

And so in my case, we were doing it across different countries.

And the industrial sector is a common lens of analysis

in political economy.

And so fortunately for me, all these big and serious industries like automobiles and

semiconductors and machine tools had all been thoroughly analyzed using the lenses of

political economy and so I proposed a study on the political economy of the wine industry in

France and the United States to my committee and when they got over their belly

laugh they said you know there might actually be something there maybe you should

go out and research it and report back to us. And so a few

years later I did report back to them and in the end they really liked the project.

So when you look at the wine industry of America and France through the lens of
