Long time listeners of the show,

one of it's so grand, I spent a lot of time focusing on the story of China and Hollywood.

What happens when an American industry, which is framed specifically around three speech,

artistic expression and American values,

what happens when this industry has to enter the Chinese market in order to make money?

Yeah, at the same time, it's forced to jettison many of those same values.

There's been plenty of controversies around this in the past few years with Rulan,

Marvel movies getting banned from the country,

all of these recurring incidents. And at the center of this story has been Top Gun Maverick.

The sequel to the original Top Gun was initially incredibly controversial,

because of the fact that the infamous leather jacket that Maverick wears on his motorcycle,

supposedly was going to have the Taiwanese flag removed from it due to an effort to get into the

Chinese market. Secondly, the company Tencent Pictures was supposedly going to finance it.

This is a Chinese company. These incredibly controversial moves really set a Hollywood up for

another big controversy. However, another thing that ended up happening. And as of this week,

Top Gun Maverick is nearing a billion dollars in global box office without actually entering into

the Chinese market. So this story has evolved so many different ways that I thought this would be

the perfect time to update our coverage. Speaking of Chris Fenton, he's the author feeding the dragon

inside the trillion dollar dilemma facing Hollywood, the NBA, and American business. He actually worked
